El Paso Water Update: Boil Water Notice Remains, Repairs Underway After Major Main Break (2026)

Breaking News: Thousands of El Paso Residents Still Under Boil Water Notice After Water Main Break

El Paso Water is working tirelessly to address a significant water main break, but the situation is far from over. Despite progress in restoring service, a boil water notice remains in effect for a large portion of the city. Let's dive into the details.

On Tuesday afternoon, El Paso Water held a news conference to update residents on the ongoing water crisis. The good news? The number of affected customers has been significantly reduced, dropping from 100,000 to 24,000. That's a huge step forward!

However, here's the catch: the boil water notice is still in place. Gilbert Trejo, VP of Operations and Technical Services, confirmed that the notice could last another 24 to 36 hours. This means residents must continue to boil their water before consumption to ensure it's safe.

"Preliminary laboratory results from samples collected yesterday in certain locations are encouraging," Trejo stated. "However, we must follow Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements and complete all required testing steps before the notice can be lifted. At this time the entire affected area remains under a boil water notice."

So, why the boil water notice? It's a precautionary measure. El Paso Water is diligently testing water samples for total coliform bacteria, including E. coli, in state and EPA-certified laboratories. Ruben Rodriguez, Chief Water Quality Compliance Officer, explained that the notice doesn't necessarily mean the water is contaminated, but it's a necessary step to ensure public safety.

And this is the part most people miss: The damaged pipe, estimated to be around 70 years old, has been removed, and a new one is being installed. Repairing the 36-inch water main has been a challenge due to the need to dewater the area. Crews are working hard to weld the new pipe segment in place.

"When the work site is dry and when our crews are ready to work on the site, everything we need is on hand to complete the repairs," Trejo said. The utility company also mentioned that engineering studies are in place to address issues with older pipes, which can corrode over time. Different methods and programs are now used to extend the life of these pipes.

"It's our job as engineers to extend the life of these pipelines, and there are different methods in place to do that," Trejo explained. "But there are a lot of programs in place that we do to extend the life of these pipelines to avoid the complete replacement."

Controversy Alert: The use of older materials like steel cylinder, concrete-coated pipes, which were the best available technology in the 1950s, raises questions about infrastructure investment and the trade-offs between cost and longevity. What are your thoughts on this? Should cities prioritize more frequent infrastructure upgrades?

Meanwhile, four homes near the break are still directly impacted, and El Paso Water is assisting those residents. Full restoration of water service could take up to 72 hours. Residents and businesses are urged to minimize water use and suspend non-essential activities during this period. El Paso Water has also created a map on its website to help residents identify affected areas.

Final Thought: This situation highlights the importance of proactive infrastructure maintenance and the potential impact of unforeseen events. What lessons can be learned from this water main break, and how can communities better prepare for similar challenges in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
